What happened
A short film on grid-scale storage: where the power goes when the sun stops, and why that question now decides whether new solar capacity is worth building.
Why it matters
Generation is the solved half of the energy transition. Storage is the half that decides whether the generation is useful at 8pm, and it is where the cost curve still has to fall.
How we got here
A decade of collapsing solar prices produced grids that can be oversupplied at noon and short at dusk. The mismatch is not a failure of renewables; it is the predictable next problem.
What it means
The argument has moved from panels to batteries, pumped hydro and the unglamorous business of grid connections. Whoever solves the dusk gap sets the pace of everything downstream.
What happens next
Watch procurement rather than announcements. Storage tenders, and what they clear at, say more about the next five years than any capacity target.
